Presentation of Undulating Flux at Dorkbot SoCal

: October 16, 2010 :

I presented my project, Undulating Flux, at Dorkbot SoCal at Machine Project in Los Angeles on Saturday October 16, 2010.  Dorkbot is a gathering of “people doing strange things with electricity”.  Many thanks to Garnet Hertz and Thomas Edwards for inviting me to speak–it was a real honor!  This meeting was special because it took place on the high seas of the Sea Nymph.  I am grateful for the engaged audience–we had some nice discussion about potential applications for my vibrotactile system and there were inquisitive questions about flow states and multimodal interaction.  As my project is experiential, I gave demos with three audience members.  It’s always fun to see peoples’ first reaction to feeling the vibrations because you can’t really tell what will happen just from looking at it.  Thanks to Loren Barton for videotaping.

Article in Coast Magazine

: September 11, 2010 :

Ariana Morin wrote an article about me and my vibrotactile work for her fashionably geek blog in Coast Magazine.  The article is quite in-depth, covering my early experiences with synaesthesia (as well as dancing to Thriller), experience as a VJ, and ideas about transduction.

I was photographed by documentary photographer Yocheved Amrami in the Dumbo neighborhood of Brooklyn last week. Amrami’s work concerns “identity” and the interplay between the individual and the collective, presence and absence, and temporal and permanent.

Undulating Flux Featured on Gizmodo

: June 9, 2010 :

I was reading Gizmodo before bed tonight and I came across this title of a post “Tickling A Massage Chair With Twirling Wiimotes”.  I thought to myself, “Oh great, someone else is doing the same thing as me.  I better check it out.”  Lo and behold, it was me!  I got a good laugh out of that.  And a nice article on Gizmodo.

Undulating Flux Featured on Maxuino Website

: June 9, 2010 :

A very important piece of my project is the bit of code that allows the Max programming environment to communicate with the Arduino microcontroller.  That code is a Max package called Maxuino.  The current lead developer, Chris Coleman, featured UF on the Maxuino website.  Chris will also use UF as an example in his upcoming presentation at the Electronic Language International Festival in Brazil.

Undulating Flux Featured on OC NSA Website

: June 9, 2010 :

No not the spying NSA, but the National Stuttering Association, of which I am currently a member of the Orange County Chapter.  I fearfully embarked on the task of recording the voiceover for the UF documentation video and somehow managed not to stutter once.  I think it was the “no stuttering while acting” phenomenon.  Regardless, I was pretty proud, and so were my friends at the NSA.
